[ARCHIVED] Annual State Water Maintenance Shutdown Begins Today

Each year around this time the State Water is shut down to perform treatment plant and distribution system maintenance. State Water is the primary source of drinking water for the City of Morro Bay.   This year the shutdown is anticipated to run from today October 29th until November 20th.

During the shutdown the City will use our groundwater wells from the Morro Valley.  The water from these wells will be filtered and treated prior to distribution at the City’s Brackish Water Reverse Osmosis (BWRO) treatment plant to reduce nitrate levels and provide disinfection.  Customers may experience brief periods of water discoloration and or higher chlorine odor due to the change in chlorine disinfectant. During the shutdown disinfection is accomplished using the “free Chlorine” method as compared to the “Combined Chlorine” method used by the State. If discoloration is noticed it is suggested residents flush their faucets to run water through the system. The water department staff will be performing additional testing and hydrant flushing during this time to ensure distributed water meets all treatment and drinking water standards.

Please feel free to call Damaris Hanson, Environmental Programs Manager 805-772-6265 or Joe Mueller, Utilities Division Manager 805-772-6300 if you have any questions.
